Women's Health at Myofascial Release Mississauga: TCM and Acupuncture

Women’s health is unique, and complex and should be treated as such. That is why at Myofascial Release Mississauga (MRM) we offer a variety of services that are dedicated to women’s health. Whether you are looking for pain relief, prenatal physio-yoga or acupuncture for fertility and hormone balance, our Mississauga clinic has got you covered.

Our amazing women’s health team consists of Yasmin Costigan, a physiotherapist, Monica Bhardwaj, a life coach and yoga instructor and Meg Rector, an acupuncturist who also specializes in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In a previous blog post, we talked all about physiotherapy supervised prenatal yoga and the benefits that come along with it. These classes are led by Monica but supervised by Yasmin, our physiotherapist. Did you know that Yasmin can also help women treat pain and dysfunction related to women’s health such as pregnancy and postpartum? Yasmin can help women safely return to exercise in both stages.

Along with physiotherapy services, MRM also offers Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture for fertility and hormone imbalance. These services are offered by Meg, a TCM practitioner and acupuncturist who has a keen interest in treatment for infertility and hormonal imbalances.

Many people know that acupuncture can work as a fertility treatment, but the power of acupuncture does not stop there. Acupuncture, which is a part of a whole system of medicine that also includes herbal medicine, bodywork, dietary changes, and lifestyle advice, has been used for thousands of years to treat women’s reproductive problems and support women in pregnancy and childbirth. Acupuncturists can help women with a variety of issues such as PCOS, amenorrhea, painful periods and endometriosis. They can also help address hormonal imbalances that lead to acne, migraines or a low sex drive. According to Jill Blakeway, a licensed and board-certified acupuncturist and clinical herbalist in New York City, most hormonal imbalances can be solved in two or three months, but more serious issues can take longer and may require a combined approach of Western and Eastern medicine.

An interesting observation that Blakeway has noticed is that many young women are seeking her services as they want to take control of their cycles, long before they are thinking of starting a family.

“Women understand that their cycles affect their whole body,” Blakeway said. “They know that their mood swings are related to their hormones or that their fatigue is particularly acute at a certain point in their cycle. They are seeking out practitioners who also see them as whole people and treat them accordingly—and that often leads them to Chinese medicine.”

A great thing about acupuncture is that the treatment is completely personalized and specific to you. For example, if you choose acupuncture to help with hormonal issues, your practitioner should be able to get a sense of what your unique hormonal challenges are. Blakeway says that this is important because no two hormonal imbalances look the same and they should not be treated the same either. Our acupuncturist, Meg, will take the time to learn what your unique hormonal challenges are and provide you with a treatment plan that is completely customized and tailored to fit your needs.
